Joanne (Jo) DeLandre

Joanne (Jo) DeLandre began working at the Bureau of Air Safety Investigation (BASI) in 1986, which became part of the multi-modal Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) in mid 1999. Jo worked within both the Human Factors & Systems Safety Branch and the Safety Investigations Branch of the ATSB and was primarily responsible for proactive safety studies in relation to air safety and the application of human factors and system safety concepts across all transport modes (aviation, rail, marine and road safety). Jo was the Course Convenor of the Human Factors for Transport Safety Investigators course, the Project Officer for the INDICATE program initiated by BASI and was appointed as the ATSB Family Liaison Officer for major aircraft accidents.


After leaving the ATSB in 2001 to take up an airline position, Jo was engaged as a Human Factors consultant co-facilitating Incident Cause Analysis Method (ICAM) training for BHP Billiton. During this time she was also engaged by the University of New South Wales as a Human Factors Consultant. In 2002, Jo was appointed as a Human Factors Specialist with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), responsible for the application of human factors and system safety in the civil aviation environment.

In 2003, Jo was appointed the Principal Human Factors Consultant for Safety Wise Solutions and has co-facilitated ICAM training for over 600 safety professionals, operational staff and contractors from a range of industries. In 2005, Jo was promoted to the position of General Manager of Safety Wise Solutions and apart from providing Human Factors specialist services to the Company, is now involved in more strategic activities such as project management and development of safety management programs.

Jo has a Bachelor's Degree in Applied Psychology and a Graduate Diploma of Psychology, has published several papers in aviation, mining and police journals and was elected to the position of Secretary of the Australian Aviation Psychology Association (AAvPA) in 2000.

She has developed extensive knowledge / experience in the following areas:
